As winter storm Jonas threatens the east coast, homeowners and renters alike are preparing for the worse. But a quick run to the grocery store isn’t the only way for you to prepare for this blizzard. So how do you prepare for this storm? By following our snow preparedness tips!
Preparing Your Home
The first thing you should do is to make sure your supply kit is up to date. Your supply kit should include:
- A three-day supply of water. One gallon of water per person, per day.
- A three-day supply of non-perishable food.
- A flashlight with extra batteries
- A battery-powered radio with extra batteries
- A first aid kit
- Medical supplies including medications for seven days
- Tool kit or multi-purpose tool
- Sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Copy of personal documents
- Cell phones with chargers and battery pack
- Emergency contacts information
- Money
- Baby supplies, if applicable
- Pen supplies, if applicable
- Tools/supplies for securing your home
- Rock salt or non-clumping kitty litter
- Winter wear and extra clothing for all member of your household
- Ample alternate heating methods like fireplaces or wood burning stoves
It is important to be prepared for any storms. If you are outdoors in the snow, use light layers to adapt your body to the weather. Wearing a hat will help to keep your body warm as most of your heat escapes through your heat. Wear insulated and waterproof footwear when walking in the snow to avoid frostbite. Hypothermia is a serious medical condition that occurs when your body gets cold and loses its heat faster than the body can make it. Symptoms of hypothermia include confusion, dizziness, exhaustion, and severe shivering. If you have any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Car Safety
As the governors around the Nation call for a state of emergency, drivers are urged to stay off the road during the storm. But in case you are planning to drive to work in the next few days, here are some ways to keep your vehicle safe during the storm:
- Keep your gas tank full
- Stay away from fallen power lines
- Make sure antifreeze levels are sufficient
- Check fluids before starting on any journey
- Check for leaks and crimped pipes in your exhaust systems
- Check oil levels
- Make sure windshield wipers are in proper working order
- Check tire treads
It is also a good idea to keep kitty litter, a blanket, and road flares in the trunk of your car. Having these items on hand could save your life whether you are stranded on the side of the road or in your home.
